Family Attractions
Although Exmoor is a relatively small area, it does have a great variety of different attractions with something to interest each and every visitor - young and old. Whatever your interests you will find something to enchant you, often taking you back in time to those days when life was simpler, slower and more gentle. Many attractions are relaxed and informal, allowing closer contact with the "exhibits", be they animals, activities or local produce - either arts and crafts or things to taste!
The relatively small area of the National Park means you are never far by car, or bus, from places of interest, so make your own selections. The listings here are intended to give you a starting indication of the type of attractions you will find - use the friendly Visitor and Tourist Information Centres for more comprehensive information and guidance - there will be one close to where you are staying.
You will be bound to find some leaflets on some of the attractions where you are staying. Our Exmoor Tourist Association members will be pleased to help you, so tell them your particular interests. When exploring Exmoor, keep your eyes and ears open and you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Castles, Houses and Gardens
Exmoor has its own castle in a dramatic setting and many smaller gems of architectural interest. These range from the medieval yarn market, also in Dunster, through the ages to the Victorian "gentleman's residence". Most villages and hamlets contain interesting old buildings with characteristic features, such as the tall Exmoor chimneys. The churches often have beautifully carved rood screens and historic graveyards, e.g, one of Nelson's shipmates is buried in Timberscombe near Dunster. Some of the interesting old houses have gardens which are open to the public on various days.
Within the surrounding areas there is a wealth of specialist plant growers who are often delighted to share their knowledge with interested visitors, (a prior phone call is advisable). These await your discovery. There are several nationally famous and important gardens all round the periphery of Exmoor.
